Birth: Jan. 7, 1926 Volant, Lawrence County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Dec. 23, 2009Farrell Mercer County Pennsylvania, USA John "Nap" Buchowski, 83, of 540 Fayette-Neshannock Falls Road, Volant, died Dec. 22, 2009, at Horizon Hospital, Farrell. He was commonly known at "Nap," and was born in Volant on Jan. 7, 1926, a son of Stephen and Anna B. Grata Buchowski. He married the former Donna J. Wetzel on May 1, 1959. He worked 25 years at General American Transportation Corp. as a plasma burner and retired from Wilmington Township as a township supervisor. He attended the former Neshannock Falls country school. He was a Marine Corps veteran and a member of Rich Hill Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Donna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shelley J. and Stephen Kish of Volant, and Diana M. and Scott Sektnan of Moon Township; five sons and three daughters-in-law, David S. and Lori of Moon Township, Edward J. of New Wilmington, Robert W. of New Castle, Gary L. and Stacy of Volant, and Jeffrey G. and Christina of New Castle; two brothers, Walter of New Castle and William of Volant; two sisters, Virginia Mikolz of Volant and Helen Szweczyk of Hollywood, Fl.; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas J. Buchowski; two brothers, Joe and Harry; and one sister, Frances. He was a lifelong farmer and was an insurance agent for Washington Mutual Fire Insurance for the past 20 years. He previously worked for Eastern States, now called Agway. He was a 1942 graduate of the former Eastbrook High School. He was a member of the Hickory Township Volunteer Fire Department and Rich Hill Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and had held many offices. He was a Keystone Farmer and was honored by that organization in 1976. Parents: Sherman Joseph and Mary Ellen McConahy McConnell. Wife: E. Jane McKnight, married on June 27, 1945. Norma E. Patterson Dicks Howard, 95, of Patterson Road passed away Feb. 19, 2011, in Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born June 4, 1915, in New Castle, Norma was a daughter of the late Austin S. and Effie M. Shaw Patterson. She married G. Lester Dicks on June 21,1934. He preceded her in death on March 19, 1970. She married Roy N. Howard in 1980. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1990. Norma graduated from Eastbrook High School and worked in the kitchen of the former Hilll View Manor for 18 years before retiring in 1964. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, ceramics, embroidery and gardening. Norma was a member of Rich Hill Presbyterian Church and Wimodausis. Survivors include three daughters, Mildred L. Emery, Opal M. Stitt and Jean M. Stewart, all of New Castle; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Baker and husband Ronald of Ellwood City; three sons, Raymond W. Dicks and wife Martha of Ellwood City, William L. Dicks and wife Patricia of New Castle, and Robert E. Dicks and wife Irene of Portersville; a stepson Don Howard and wife Gayle of Sharon; 15 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and two husbands, Norma was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Hubert and Raiford Patterson; two sisters, Mildred Gibson and Mary Swartzlander; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. Gladys J. Patterson McConnell, 85, of Eastbrook-Volant Road, Volant, Pa., passed away at her residence on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, following an extended illness. She was born in Eastbrook, Hickory Township, Lawrence County, on June 20, 1927 to Ernest Patterson and Margaret Houk Patterson. She married Richard M. McConnell on April 14, 1948. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 2005. Gladys worked at Shenango Pottery in New Castle, for seven years before quitting to raise her family. After the family had grown, Gladys had a lot of fun babysitting Missy, Marty, Mary, Willie, Billi JO, Tessa and Alex. Gladys enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, going to arts and crafts with her friend Lucille and traveling with her husband. Gladys was a member of Rich Hill United Presbyterian Church, Miller Missionary Society of the Church, TOPS, and the Hickory Township Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Ann McConnell of the residence; two sons, David Sherman (Virginia) McConnell of Volant and Richard DeWayne McConnell of Volant; two granddaughters, Danielle (Jay) Mechtley of Wilmington, N.C.; Valerie McConnell of Butler; four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Lukas, Ashlynn and Alexander Mechtley, all of Wilmington, N.C. In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Joseph; two sisters, Gertrude Zoltani and Irene Rose; and four brothers, Samuel, Clyde, Harold, and Ivan Patterson. A private service will be conducted Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, 1778 Perry Highway, Volant, with the Rev. Rich Horn, pastor of Rich Hill United Presbyterian Church, presiding. Betty Jeanne Moore, 415 Ladybug Lane, Washington Township, Lawrence County, died Saturday evening (6-21-08) in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle. She was 46. Mrs. Moore was born July 14, 1961, in New Castle to James and Claire Hatten Hetrick. She was employed at Carter’s in Prime Outlets at Grove City, Springfield Township. The 1979 graduate of Wilmington High School loved baking and scrapbooking. Mrs. Moore was a member of Rich Hill Presbyterian Church, Volant. Surviving are: her husband, William L. Moore, whom she married April 17, 1982; her mother, Claire Hetrick of New Bedford, Pa.; two daughters, Melissa Ann Moore and Samantha Lynn Moore, both of Volant; a son, Steve Lawrence Moore, at home; a brother, James R. Hetrick and his wife, Dianne, of New Wilmington; a sister, Cathy M. Fox and her husband, Ronald, of Pulaski; and two sisters-in-law, Diann Moore and Janet Moore, both of Volant. Birth: Jun. 7, 1925 Death: Mar. 2, 2011 Ernest A. Carr, 85, of 433 E. Maitland Lane, New Castle, passed away at his residence the evening of March 2, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. Born June 7, 1925, in Volant, he was the son of Jesse E. and Birdella Hunter Carr. He graduated from Eastbrook High School in 1943. Ernie married June Thompson Carr on July 7, 1950, and they had 60 happy years together. Ernie retired in 1990 from Columbia Gas, where he was a street service man with over 40 years of service. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving during World War II. Ernie loved woodworking of all kinds and gave many generations of blue birds good homes. He also enjoyed getting together with friends. Ernie attended Chippewa Evangelical Free Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet Carr Zellman and Lew Zellmann of Monaca; a sister, Helen Carr Seamans of New Castle, and a grandson, Andy Zellmann. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Theodore, Howard and Theron Carr, and a sister, Blanche Carr Barron. Visitation will be today, March 4, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 5, 2011, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the R. CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME, New Castle. Martha E. Wetzel Murincsak, 82, of Pulaski passed away the night of April 8, 2014, in the Cleveland Clinic. Born May 13, 1931, in Pulaski, she was a daughter of Samuel Bernard and Laura Ruth Miller Wetzel. Martha was preceded in death Oct. 11, 1980, by her husband, Frank D. Murincsak, whom she had married June 26, 1976. She attended Eastbrook High School and went on to work at Airway Industries and Nepco. She was employed as a nurse's aide at Indian Run and later worked in home health care. Among her many interests were card club, bowling and crocheting. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandson, John Wetzel. She loved fashion, clothing and the music of George Strait. Martha attended New Life Baptist Church. She is survived by her son and his wife, John W. and Stacey Wetzel of Pulaski; a brother, Robert Dale Wetzel of Pulaski; two sisters, Reba Allen and Donna Jean Buchowski, both of Volant; one grandson, John B. Wetzel; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, William I., Samuel N., Harold A. and James O. Wetzel. She was a homemaker. Jane was a member of Rich Hill Presbyterian Church, Washington Township, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years, was a member of the Miller Missionary Society and held various church offices. She was a co-founder of the Eastbrook TOPS Club and a member of the Hickory Township Fireman's Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Elizabeth and her husband, Robert Davis, of New Wilmington and Laura Ellen McConnell of Volant; two sons, John Ezra and his wife, Lois McConnell, of Volant and Bruce Arnold McConnell of Volant; two sisters, Florence McConay and her husband, George, of New Castle and Sue Betley of New Castle; three grandchildren, Pamela McConnell, Roberta and her husband, Ryan Baney, and Joy and her husband, Sammy Stapes; and five great-grandchildren, Audrey Marie Staples, Ainsley Jane Staples, Ian Samuel Staples, Malia Mae Baney and Kyla Jo Baney.
